National Sexual, Domestic and Family Violence LGBTQ+ Inclusive Practice Training

ACON has partnered with sexual, domestic and family violence service providers across Australia as a part of our national Say It Out Loud project.
As a part of this project, we are providing a 2-part LGBTQ+ Inclusive Practice training webinar, in addition to our online eLearning course. This training is ONLY open to member organisations from:

  • DVConnect (QLD)
  • Women's Safety Services South Australia
  • The Women's Council for Domestic and Family Violence Services (WA)
  • Sexual Assault Support Services (TAS)
  • YWCA Australia (NT)
  • Stopping Family Violence (WA)

ACON is a fiercely proud community organisation. The work of ACON has been designed by and for our communities. As ACON has grown, it has been proud to work with a diverse range of people to ensure their voice and health needs are represented in the work ACON does. Sexual, domestic and family violence (SDFV) is an important issue for the LGBTQ communities that ACON works with and represents. ACON has had a dedicated DFV project since 2004.

The Sexual, Domestic, and Family Violence LGBTQ+ Inclusive Practice Webinar aims to equip participants with the skills and knowledge to identify unsafe relationships outside of the predominant heterosexual discourse, create safer pathways for clients and generally work with LGBTQ+ communities in culturally competent and safer ways.

There are three steps to complete this training:

  1. Complete the online pre-requisite eLearning(~1 hour) This is self-directed at the learner’s pace and must be completed before attending the webinar. This includes the following steps:
    1. Pre-training Survey
    2. ACON's LGBTQ Introduction eLearning which has three learning modules:
      • Meet the LGBTQ Communities
      • Know the Facts
      • Learn about the Lived Experiences
  2. Attend 2 webinars (3 hours each) Learners have to join the webinar 5 minutes before the session start time, via the webinar access link. The webinar access link will only be provided to those who complete the eLearning modules (step 1) as we consider that an essential part of the learning pathway. The links will be sent after 4PM of the business day before the first part of the webinar.
    1. Part 1 looks at the effects of discrimination and minority stress and how it impacts LGBTQ clients, prevalence rates, tactics of abuse and barriers to accessing services, power differentiation in LGBTQ relationships and understanding violence within queer cultures.
    2. Part 2 looks at social justice and allyship, correct language and building rapport, inclusive service provision and case studies.
  3. Complete the online training evaluation (~10 minutes)This needs to be completed right after the second webinar training.
    1. Learners complete a post-evaluation survey after being marked as attended on our system
    2. Learners get access to their certificate and can print or save that as PDF only after the training evaluation is completed.

Training Outcomes:

After this training, learners should be able to:

  • Understand the differences between gender and sexuality and the LGBTQ+ acronym
  • Summarise unique health and wellbeing disparities faced by sexuality and gender diverse people and understand how it impacts service provision
